Playground season is here!

With summer finally here, we are entering the “busy season” for playground injuries. Playgrounds are a great way for kids to exercise and have fun. Close supervision can help prevent playground related injuries. Here are the top 10 things to remember when letting your kids play outside this summer:

  1. Going down a slide with a small child on your lap is one of the leading causes of playground related leg fractures in little kids.

  2. Monkey bars are one of the biggest offenders in playground injuries.

  3. Children ages 5-9 are the most likely to be injured on a playground when not closely supervised.

  4. The safest equipment on a playground are see saws or teeter totters.

  5. Avoid playgrounds that have concrete, asphalt, hard packed soils, or grass.

  6. Allowing kids to play on playgrounds can help them develop motor skills that help prevent sports injuries!

  7. Always swing sitting down and allow one child on a swing at a time.

  8. Don't allow your child to jump for a distance from a swing or climbing equipment.

  9. Keep a clear space in front of and behind swings.

  10. Appropriate footwear can prevent trips and falls.
